AFF Cup History



Formed in 1984, that houses the football federation countries in Southeast Asia, or the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF), initiated the biennial tournament between nations in the region in 1996.

Initially known as the Tiger Cup tournament (Tiger Cup), takes its name from the main sponsors a beer company from Singapore. After the sponsorship was completed, the championship title was changed to AFF Cup or AFF Cup for the 2007 edition - and frills add new links again become AFF Suzuki Cup since 2008.

In the first edition, the 10 countries of Southeast Asia to follow this tournament with Singapore as the host. Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam advanced to the last four, and Thailand as the champion.

In the second edition in 1998, the tournament format changed. Except for the fourth semi-finalist team in 1996 which automatically enters the final round, six other countries following the first qualifying round consists of two groups.

Dihajat finals in Vietnam, and the hosts broke through the final round before losing to Singapore with a thin score 0-1.

In 2000 abolished the qualification phase. Thailand to host the tournament, winning it for the second time. In the next edition of Thailand scored a hat-trick after beating Indonesia in the top of the party. For the record, AFF Cup 2002 held in two countries, namely Indonesia (Group A) and Singapore (Group B), while the semifinals and finals held in Jakarta.

Then, since the 2004 edition to date, again no change in competition format, namely the semi-finals and final played over two legs. That is, each team playing home and away.

Of a total of eight editions, Singapore and Thailand to collect three trophies, while Malaysia and Vietnam each one. Indonesia, although most often in the final four times, never win it, including in the 2010 edition as host (with Vietnam).
